    Hannukah (10th-18th December)

    Date Marked: November 28 – December 6

     Category: Religious

Where It’s Marked: Israel and various Jewish communities around the world

Why It’s Marked: Commemorating the re-dedication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem

Also known as Chanukah or Festival of Lights, Hanukkah is an 8-day Jewish festival that traditionally begins on the 25th day of the month Kislev in the Hebrew calendar. According to the Gregorian calendar, the day Hanukka begins each year is usually different. This year, the festival falls between November 28 and December 6.

Hanukkah is the time to celebrate the dedication of the second temple in Jerusalem after the Maccabean Rebellion. Celebrations include lighting candles every night for eight days. Hanukkah is characterized by the recitation of special songs, such as Mao Zedong, as well as the Hallel prayer. Other popular Hannukah rituals include eating oil-dried foods such as potato pancakes (also known as lotcakes) and jam-filled donuts (also known as sufganiat). Celebrants also play with Drydale and exchange gifts.

    Yule (21st December-1st January)

    Date Marked: December 22 – January 1

     Category: Pagan

Where It’s Marked: Germany and various German communities around the world

Why It’s Marked: To pay tribute to the Norse god Odin

Yule, also called Uletide, is a festival celebrated by Germans around the world. The festival has pagan roots and can be traced back to the Norse god Odin as well as the Anglo-Saxon festival of Modranihat. Ulitide technically falls into the winter solstice, making it one of the oldest and most popular winter celebrations in the world.

The ancients identified Yule by burning a huge log in a fire and spending long nights outside. Although the practice of burning logs is still practiced today, most people mark the occasion by making a yule altar, making an evergreen yule wreath, or returning it to Mother Nature. Candle-lit dinners and yul tree decorations are also common, such as the exchange of nature-based gifts.

    Festivus (23rd December)

    Date Marked: December 23

     Category: Parody

Why It’s Marked: To advocate against Christmas consumerism

Where It’s Marked: Worldwide, particularly in the United States

Festivas is a global holiday in December that entered popular culture in 1997, courtesy of an episode titled “The Strike” on the Seinfeld Show. The purpose of this parody holiday is to speak out against Christmas consumerism. Unlike buying an expensive Christmas tree, Festivas is marked by standing around a plain aluminum pole. Other popular festive rituals include “achievement of power” and “disclosure”.

Some scholars have dubbed Festivas enthusiasts as conventional dissidents with an irrational view of Christmas and its true meaning. However, the popularity of the holiday continues to grow, especially among frugal spenders and supporters of minimalism.

    Christmas (25th December)

    Date Marked: December 25

     Category: Religious

     Where It’s Marked: Worldwide

Why It’s Marked: To commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ

Christmas is undoubtedly the most popular December holiday. The day marks the birth of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom Christians believe was the last true prophet sent by God to save mankind from sin. What sets Christmas apart from most religious festivals is that it is usually celebrated by non-Christians as well.

However, it is noteworthy that the exact date of Jesus’ birth is unknown. Christmas was chosen because of his correspondence with the winter solstice in the Roman calendar. Also, Christmas is celebrated culturally in different countries as opposed to religious ceremonies. There are many ways to mark the occasion, including leaving a gift for Santa Claus or Father Christmas. While many also attend church services on Christmas day, some choose to go on an all-out holiday.

    Boxing Day (26th December)

    Date Marked: December 26

    Category: General

     Why It’s Marked: Symbolism varies

Opinions are always divided on how Boxing Day was created and how it can be celebrated. Some believe it was the official day when churches gave begging boxes to the poor after Christmas. Others call boxing a day of appreciation for their service throughout the year and consider it a day to give gifts to work boys, postmen and a variety of servants.

Regardless of its symbolism, Boxing Day is one of the most iconic holidays in December. This date has been declared a public holiday in many countries around the world, including Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. In these countries, Boxing Day is usually marked by the organization of sporting events.

    Kwanzaa (26 December-1 January)

    Date Marked: December 26 – January 1

    Category: Cultural

Why It’s Marked: To preserve certain African values

Where It’s Marked: Worldwide, particularly in the United States

Kwanzaa is a December holiday that is rooted in African history and is celebrated mainly in the United States. The day was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga and was first observed in 1966 after the Watts riots in Los Angeles, California. The word ‘quanza’ is a loose translation of the Swahili word ‘quanza’, meaning ‘first.’ In this case, the name comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya quanza”, meaning “first fruit.”

Kwanzaa is often celebrated with traditional African songs and dances. There is also storytelling, reading poetry and discussing various ethical values of African culture. These events usually end at the end of each day with a large traditional meal and a mega feast called ‘Karmu’ on 31st December.

    New Year’s Eve (31 December)

    Date Marked: December 31

    Category: General

    Where It’s Marked: Worldwide

Why It’s Marked: To mark the end of the year

The last December holiday on this list also falls on the last day of the month. The purpose of celebrating the New Year is to mark the end of the old year as well as the beginning of the coming year.

There are many ways to celebrate this day. Most believers visit their places of worship to thank God for the blessings of another year. Other people celebrate New Year’s Eve in pubs, restaurants and other social gatherings. Celebrations usually peak at midnight, where cheers, songs and fireworks rent the air.
